English Literature

  • Class Overview

  • Our literature classes are designed to expose students to a wide range of literary works and to provide a broad and comprehensive overview of English literature. Students will be exposed to the fundamentals of literature, and can enjoy and appreciate a wide range of literary works, analyse texts and place such pieces contextually. Development of interpretation and analytical skills appropriate for novels, poetry, lyrics, short stories and essays are practiced in class.

    Guidance documents on literary terms (tropes) and literary theory will be provided to students.

    Each class will focus on:

    • Developing superior writing skills and vocabulary, including:
      • Various Styles of Writing (descriptive, narrative, opinion, expository/factual writing)
      • Flow and Cohesion (transitional phrases/words etc)
      • Innovative Figures of Speech (similes, metaphors, personification, imagery etc)
      • Advanced and Descriptive Vocabulary

    • Fostering of analytical and organisational capability:
      • Logical Reasoning
      • Interpretation and Judgment
      • Concepts and Ideas

    • In Class Coursework, including reading of:
      • Poetry
      • Short Stories
      • Lyrics
      • Drama
      • Fiction and Non-fiction
      • Period Literature/Classics

    Class Time: 90 minutes
